Shop/Lab Safe Reopening Under COVID Restrictions

The Seventh Annual Shop Managers Conference, SSMC2020, will take place July 21, 2020 virtually via Zoom! 

The SSMC Conference is designed to bring Student Shop managers and directors together to discuss important safety issues and concerns in student shops across the nation. In addition, the conference focuses on space and equipment management. SSMC 2020 will offer presentations and discussions with student shop peers from colleges and universities throughout the United States.


Faculty, staff and students who oversee, utilize or consult with academic making environments such as machine shops, wood shops, sculpture studios, theater shops, and makerspaces. EHS and Risk Management personnel with making environment oversight responsibilities.

Conference Goal

Continue development of a professional community that brings together personnel from student shops and making spaces from a broad array of post-secondary educational institutions and disciplines to share case-studies and discuss common challenges such as: safety, training, inclusion, technology, finances, and equipment.

Conference Focus

The focus of this year’s conference will center reopening student shops under the restrictions of the Covid pandemic. This half day virtual conference will offer presentations with Q&A sessions, a panel discussion and small group breakout sessions. The break sessions will afford the opportunity for discussion of panel topics and those additional topics raised by attendees. Further review of these discussions by the whole conference will focus on setting goals for further work by the members of SSMC to expand on the mission of the SSMC.

    Conference FORMAT

    ZOOM Video Conferencing

    This conference will occur using ZOOM video conferencing, with brief presentations or panel discussions preceding a group discussion about each topic. A link to the conference will be sent out in a separate email before the conference.
